Song One and Discovering Johnny Flynn

Today, I stumbled across the trailer for Song One, due to come out January 23, 2015. My oh my, I want to watch it so badly! Watch the trailer, it’ll do a much better job summarizing than I can.

The premise of the movie is not particularly unique, but interesting enough. It’s well-edited and doesn’t give away too much of the movie. It’s an indie film, which is a pretty good indicator that it will have heart. Anne Hathaway is in it, but eh.

James Forrester/Johnny Flynn

No, what captured my interest was the musician character, James Forrester. Forrester plays an underground singer/songwriter – talented, shy, and down to earth. He’s also incredibly hot in a hipster way. I mean, he has an accent! Talented + Hotness + Musician = GOLD. That song at the end of the trailer sent me on a two hour Internet search and I still can’t find it. It’s been driving me crazy all day. I guess I’ll have to wait until the movie comes out.

Google quickly informed me that Forrester is actually Johnny Flynn (pretty great name) and an artist in real life. He seems to resemble his on-screen character pretty closely and it pleases me considering I fell in love with James Forrester in a 1:50 minute trailer. He’s a relatively unknown artist, but with a dedicated cult following. If you already knew about Flynn and didn’t need a movie to discover this gem…props. I’m jealous, you’re clearly cooler than me. Check out Flynn’s real stuff though. Seriously, it’s good. It’s got a folksy charm, is poetic, touching, and personal. It’ simple in melody, but his lyrics are so deep. It’s a kind of music that’s pretty hard to come by these days. Take a listen:

  1. You have great taste! 🙂 And although I first met Johnny and became a fan way back in February 2008, I’m not very cool, so no worries haha! I’m glad you discovered him now, because he’s an amazingly inspirational individual. And very unusual (beautiful!) in the fact that he honestly and truly doesn’t care about fame, money or even looking good. A while back I wrote a blog about a portrait I’ve drawn of him, if you’re interested: http://emmivisser.com/2013/04/26/art-friday-a-perfect-portrait-a-k-a-johnny-flynn/ (of all the hundreds of portraits of drawn in my life, his is the only one I’m 100% happy with)
